SEPT-OCT Study a Master - Women Painter
Sunday, August 17, 2025
It's been awhile since we studied a master painter. And this time around, each artist will choose a woman painter (no longer living) who inspires us. Don't be shy about picking a painter you have never heard of. By choosing a woman painter we will not default to our usual heroes such as Matisse, Van Gogh nor Monet!
Here is my folder of research, there are two files in here, greatly assisted by no other than Chatgpt.
These documents are representative though not exhaustive. So I encourage each of you to research the list, as well as find your own inspiration.
And then find a painting that you love by your woman artist and the first month we will "copy" that painting learning everything we can...by observing deeply how the painter uses color, value, composition and brushwork.
Month two in October we will be creating our own compositions but carrying forward into practice our new skills and observances......more on that later.
.....
I used to offer a Study a Master month of study every year, but this one has gotten overshadowed by all our other themes and a year passes by so quickly these days!
It is so important to honor the legacy of painters of yesteryear....
We will be learning their stories, a bit about their struggles and triumphs, their artistic challenges, how they painted, how they found time to paint, what and who inspired them.
A little studying this month perhaps, but it's so you can share with your fellow classmates what you have learned. And then the painting begins....I will ease us into our mentorship the first couple of weeks so no worries needed. Just choose an artist on the list or off it. And we start Sept 1 and 3.
Do Google searches for more info on your woman artists of interest. Perhaps find a YouTube documentary of some artists you are considering....
Have Fun!
