A Cat Lady Paints Dogs Sketchbook 2 of 4

Wednesday, July 2, 2025

And here we go with sketchbook 2, by the way, these are only highlights from volume 2. These books are burgeoning with drawing after drawing, sketch after sketch.

A couple of things happened while I was keeping this second journal that fall under the "Magic Happens when you Show Up" philosophy.

1.  As I got more comfortable with dog shapes they loosened up again.

2. My drawings became more Illustratory. I think this is my most fun way to paint. Perhaps I missed my calling and if i had discovered Art earlier in life I would have gone into Illustration.

3. I added words, lettering. So much Fun! Which led me to thinking about changing or rather evolving how I keep sketchbooks. Truly designing each page and including lettering and even writing.  We will see....

4. I recalled a time when I had just begun painting (age 54 remember, I am 71 now) and was oh so serious about becoming a serious artist. I found a teacher who was offering a workshop in town and went to meet him. His work was huge and representational with gorgeous loose energetic brushstrokes (not that I knew a brushstroke from a lump of charcoal in those days) but I was entranced, enchanted and salivating to study with him. I am a good student, avid. Couldn't wait.  We talked, I showed him a few of my early portraits, his comment was

Oh, your work is cartoony.

He said, dismissively.  I was slayed, crushed, devastated, embarrassed, humiliated.....
and I ended up not studying with him.

Looking back, I can laugh now, he was right. Just look at these little doggo drawings and paintings. They are Cartoony!!! But now I describe it as Free, Shapey, Fun, Expressive, Whimsical....

I don't think that artist was deliberately being mean, but perhaps he was a bit insensitive or undiplomatic.  Or i am too sensitive for my own good. Oh my goodness - our words!!!  But NOW I get it. He saw the illustration potential....it was there, early on. Sheesh, he was right.

Meanwhile....Don't let anyone define you, or tell you you don't have any talent. Ridunculous!

Do what you Love.
Do What makes you Happy.
And then Do More of it!
That's it.

Here's sketchbook 2

I think I will have to split this into even more posts...so many pics!
