I have been working on a little project the last 3 months. A dear student gifted me a big book of dog black and white photographs. Every once in awhile I need to sink my teeth into something focussed. So I decided to learn how to paint dogs.

Meet Freya my new kitty! She is always lurking at my art desk....I suspect she is an artist in Catlandia. |
Starting with a simple sketchbook with very ordinary paper (cardstock vellum) from an office supply store. Initially just watercolor and no drawing first. I wanted to see if I could create the basic shapes with just watercolor and a brush.
I ended up filling 3 sketchbooks with my pictures and will be sharing them in 4 separate posts.
In full confession, so many pages are crap. Lol. But I kept going and didn't look back. I am no longer the perfectionist of yesteryear...and I don't let my inner critic "dog" me haha anymore.
My art journey these past few years is all about exploring new ways to draw and paint and express myself. My joy is in just creating.
Here we go:
I started with these not in my sketchbook but they got me interested in dog shapes. As you can see I didn't have much of a clue how dogs were really shaped. So my DOG Deep Observations begin......

So the first sketchbook begins... mid Feb 2025
I started with simple watercolor....going for the SHAPES of dogs in their activities. I mostly just drew with watercolor, and maybe later I would go back and add some pencil, or shading with gouache.
This was the inspiration - amazing black and white photos, and I am ever so grateful for my very kind student, Judy O. for gifting me with this book. I had no idea, nor did she I suspect, have a clue what a huge inspiration this sparked for me.
So about this tangerine.....I get bored easily and every once in awhile throughout the 3 journals that comprised this Learning about Dog Shapes journey there are intermittent pages with lemons, apples, maybe a few art supplies, etc....that show up.
I have come to understand them as Palette Cleansers. LOL.
So those are the highlights from Volume one. I will go prep the next two posts. Expect them in a few days....
Hope you enjoy this little project of mine but even more so that you get inspired to keep a daily sketchbook yourselves. Something magical happens when you begin....and Show Up. Promise!
