A Not So Little Pin Cushion - slow stitched into a little painting
Tuesday, January 3, 2023
This started out as a little 6 inch square piece. I just started building little scraps of fabric on top and then started stitching. Didn't have a plan, or have a thought of what it would become...if anything.
Then it hit me, ahhh, make a pin cushion. Didn't want it flat....so I cut up some orange felt and made a patched strip, sewed that in for more depth, stuffed with polyfil....then added a flatter bottom reinforced with cardboard.
It's BIG! For a pin cushion, but still quite the "little painting", don't you think? There is color theory, composition, values, texture added not only from scraps of fabric, but from the stitching. And it's all freeform....no plan, no following a stencil....just stitch one way til you feel like changing direction. Like a paint brush - change direction of your stroke, change brush size, little diluted paint vs impasto.
This has been such fun!!!
