Coming Up in March: Chairs!
Thursday, February 27, 2025
In December I sent out to all my students a feedback survey. It was chockful of things they wanted to pursue further in their art. For years and years now I have come up with pretty non-repeating themes each month. Sometimes, like color theory, we will revisit this infinite subject, but always with a new twist.
But one request, from those artists who have been with me years now, was to paint Chairs again. So that is our March theme.
Pick a chair, an heirloom, your favorite chair, your very ordinary kitchen chair, or stepladder.....think outside the box, ALWAYS. Could be your mussed up bed, or your perfectly made bed....sofa, gazebo furniture....whatever inspires. There is no wrong.
Recognize these chairs made iconic by Van Gogh? Good enough subject to paint for Vincent, plenty good enough for me. And you?
As for what we have been up to during February, which absolutely whizzed by, our theme was:
Abstracted Still Lifes
Not non-representational.....as most of us enjoy painting "things". But how do we Say Less, Express More, Suggest not Tell, and just enjoy the process of painting itself rather than always obsessing about the end product. Those were just a few things we kept in mind. Edges softer, brush strokes more painterly, less is more.
Here are a few of mine....

If the idea of painting a special chair excites you, consider joining one of our Zoom classes this coming month. We will be taking a week off at end of month (March 31 thru April 6) and start back April 7 and 9th.
