A Plan to Sketch Daily - to keep the covid blues away

Thursday, February 4, 2021

Hello dear friends and fellow creatives,

Just a short note to let you know I am gearing up to share my 100 CROWS project, but decided to film some of my daily sketching BEFORE I switched gears from sketching whatever flotsam and jetsum I had laying around my house to the dedicated 100 Crows. As we all can attest, this past year has been challenging. What I suffered most from was my dwindling focus, not just of things creative, but just about everything. And I love to have a focus / a big project in front of me begging for completion.

So, I decided to create my own focus, which was very simply, to sketch something every day. Didn't matter what it was, or how long or short a time it took. Just draw. I left it wide open, something I could definitely have success with, so truly, some days I only sketched maybe 5 minutes, other days, sheesh......a couple hours or more?

I started with just ink, mostly fineliners of different sorts, Sharpie ultra fine is a favorite. But soon missed color.

So I bought some colored pencils, which I had always confessed I didn't care for, but I needed something new and different, thus challenging, to play with along with the ink. So, I purchased a set of 120 Prismacolors (way too many, by the way) and I happily got to figure out how to use them to add pops of color to my little drawings.

I draw very simply, usually one object to a page, and that's that. I truly admire folks who can do big involved technically perfect drawings.....but it's just not me. My subjects tend to be still lifes, faces, nature objects, vases of flowers, stuff laying around my coffee table, or even jars from my kitchen cupboard, simply drawn, and I will admit, on the wonky side. That's where I have the most fun.

I don't like drawing perfectly (or my standard of perfect), it's just not fun. But I sure do love a line that walks a bit tipsy!

So here you go, my latest YouTube upload....the sketchbook drawings before the 100 Crows. Coming soon.
