I’ve picked up some Chinese paint brushes and ink and rice paper, and am having fun being loose and free, and radishes are just go doggone paintable!

Rice paper is too thin on it’s own, so mounting is necessary, and I’ve done that for you.  Ready to frame.

Changing media just for fun – well actually my oil pastels just arrived and I realized how much I had missed them.  I don’t think I’ve ever done an entire painting (no matter how small) in just oil pastels, as I usually use them for accents.  But here’s Eva….and just what is she oohing and aahing over do you think?

She’s quite a bit more vibrant than photo shows….here I am in NY without my photo studio!!!  Oh well…

I love trees, don’t paint them much, but this one kind of materialized.  I used mostly gouache and india ink, but added some dots of oil pastel to represent the moss, so there’s some nice little texture that the photograph doesn’t quite show.  Oh yes, some silver metallic oil pastel as well….methinks it is quite the mystical tree.

While I’m here in NY, I have loads of family pics around the house as inspiration.  I’ll be pulling out the really really old/vintage ones soon, but for now, here is one of  my two beautiful girls (on left) and my two precious nieces on right. – the girls are all grown now, one married, one a mother, one a PhD, another in school…..living their lives.  My sister and I love this pic.  We’re thinking of making prints for the girls for Christmas next year.

Another sweet puppy….oh how I love animals.  As a friend of mine calls our animal friends – angels in fur bodies!  How right that is! Doesn’t it look like this little pup is hearing the words, “You wanna treat?” (Well, duh!)

Sleep Walker – original gouache and ink on paper, 7 x 5in., $50

This painting started with another simple monoprint.  I took another sheet of paper, spread paint all over it, took a second sheet of paper which I had soaked a moment in water, placed it on top of the fresh pigment piece, then rubbed my hand lightly over it before pulling it apart.  Sometimes this is a good technique to get rid of the Blank White Canvas syndrome and give you an interesting background to work upon.

I took my dip pen and india ink to it when it was dry, and just liked the purity of the line, so I left it as is without further gouache treatment.

My dad asked me to chop up some radishes and omgosh, they were so pretty with their leaves on I grabbed the one intact bunch and skipped over to my art table….and proceeded to paint these.

We all want to be Queen for a Day, right?  I’ll tell you a secret….her cheeks didn’t come out right, so I had to figure out a “fix” and decided on a wee bit of collage.  So, I rummaged thru the newspapers to find something, wasn’t sure what, and there it was under the bridge playing notes.  Thus, her K, Q, J, and Ace cheekiness!

On paper. Used some metallic pens as well as my usual india ink and gouache.

I really thought I would quit with this little series after Puppy #3, but I had a painting that didn’t work hanging out on my table, so I covered it with gesso….I seldom EVER throw out an old painting.  And I scratched some lines into the wet gesso, just because.  When it was all dry, i still wanted to paint yet another puppy.  So here is number 4, and it’s got some nice texture that the photo doesn’t show too well.
