Another abstract with analagous colors to keep the palette very tight – this time I used ultramarine, chinese ink to must the colors, and a violet. Splatters kind of blend the colors together to create harmony. I’m fascinated by the dry brushwork especially expressive via asian brushes.

The Tales We Spin – original gouache & ink / paper, 5 x 7in., $50
A couple of abstracts (today and tomorrow) painted to phrases that came to my mind. Chose to use analagous colors to keep the palette very tight – in layman’s terms that means I chose 2/3 colors right next to each other on the color wheel…..blue and blue-greens. Cobalt, Turquoise, and Ultramarine. Then to add just a bit of interest – warmth, I dropped in some burnt sienna (an orange – opposite of blue).

Sometimes I just have the urge to paint something fun and silly!
Today I fly home to California after over three months in NY……sad, relieved, such a mix of emotions. Endings, doors closed. Wonder what is ahead? Hey Silly Dodo, thanks for reminding me to keep a sense of humor!

Purely Pear – original gouache & ink / paper, 7 x 5in., $50
At first I painted the pear in ink only and really liked the gradations of grey. But a couple days later I thought I’d paint some color over it….kind of like the grisaille oil paintings. But I wanted to keep it very zen…..splashes of paint are pretty doggone irresistable for me, too!

Hope of Spring – original gouache & ink / paper, 7 x 5in. – SOLD
SOLD. I used lovely expressive asian brushes again, and the background was painted first. I had no idea what I would paint over it, but wanted to experiment with painting over abstract backgrounds. I love the effect, there’s a luminosity that shines through that if I had tried to paint deliberately…..well, I highly doubt I could have done it. It’s spring here in Rochester – so many amazing fruit trees blooming on every corner. Brilliant!

Flowers at Midnight – original gouache & ink / paper, 7 x 5in., $50
This started out as a painting gone bad. So i covered the entire thing with chinese ink and let it dry overnite. the next day I thought I’d see what I could do with my wonderful opaque gouache over this dark background. Voila, a little vase of bright and lively flowers! Definitely proves the beauty and versatility of opaque media. And gouache…which i fall in love with the more I use it….is really magical. I can use it like oils or acrylic, but it’s the lovely easy clean up that I love. And it can be applied thickly so that it’s possible to scratch texture in it. Look at the vase for an example of this.

Pine in Fog – original gouache & ink / paper, 7x5in., $50
After reading a stack of asian brush painting books, a style which thrills me, I purchased some asian brushes and some chinese ink and have had an inspiring time working in this style…albeit completely untrained, and entirely in “my” style. But oh such fun!

King of Heart I – original gouache & ink / paper, 7 x 5in, $50
First there is the ink, then the gouache, then a bit of back and forth. I used a very limited palette: yellow ochre, (a week bit of azo yellow for the eyes) burnt sienna, ultramarine. And chinese ink. I start with the eyes……it is what compels me to paint – that’s why you see fewer still lifes and many more faces – animal and human – from me. Meow!
