Cutting a Canvas Panel

Thursday, August 29, 2013

I went to a workshop where we were asked to bring large canvas panels to paint on, 16 x 20 size.  Then we did little studies, 4 small ones to a board.  Some of them came out cute!!!  Oh woe is me, now what?
I had no idea you could cut a canvas panel and though there are a few drawbacks, it’s still nice to know this is so doable.
WHAT YOU NEED
  • A metal ruler with a lip is best.
  • pencil to measure…
  • a very sharp heavy duty razor blade
  • piece of wood for under the painting while you cut.  Or thick cardboard. Or best yet a cutting mat!

it's very easy to cut down a canvas panel, but you do need to do so carefully!

Be sure you have something able to be cut into under your painting.  I used a piece of wood I had out on my patio.
I just lined up my ruler so I had a good straight edge, and cut.  Took about 7 tries.  DON’T try to cut all the way thru on the first try, egad, you could snap your razor or something awful. Please be careful!  Figure it will take several cuts and just each time apply a bit more pressure.  That’s it!

i generally put a liberal amount of matte gel on the raw edge, let it dry thoroughly, then frame my new piece
