Yuki Mae – original ink & gouache, 13″x10″, $140
Well, another dream has come true! This piece, Yuki Mae, was juried into the RED Show (Small Works) at the prestigious Gallery One, in Petaluma, California. A couple of years ago when I first visited Gallery One, I was in awe of all the beautiful and diverse art on the walls. Under my breath I made a wish, or a goal perhaps, that “someday” my art would be in there too.
I also wanted to do something new for this submission, and it was rather serendipitous that I took out my ink last week and just started playing in my sketchbook, got out a spray bottle of water, sprayed here, sprayed there, made a mess more times than not, but then finally got the hang of what I was attempting. Fluidity contrasting dry brush, evocative expressions and only a peek of RED. I just had a strong sense that I needed to underplay the red. Well, after my sketchbook was filled with a few pieces, I tried a few faces on 14 x 10.5 watercolor sheets – a sampler pack I had laying around. She’s in a 13 x 10in black wood frame, looking spiffy.
And after Miss Caroline, Lady Edith, and Georgia Jones were created, here came Yuki Mae. (Other gals coming up soon….)
